Product details

In his groundbreaking 1957 collection, Eero Saarinen revolutionized executive seating by creating a fluid, sculptural form. Recognizing the importance of user comfort, Saarinen was the first to construct a chair shell from fiberglass, a flexible material that adapts to body weight. The chair is offered with or without arms and features either metal or wooden legs or a swivel base.

As the son of celebrated architect Eliel Saarinen, Eero was classically trained in both sculpture and architecture. His collaboration with Charles Eames in 1937 resulted in the Organic Armchair, made from plywood and foam rubber, and the first three-dimensionally shaped bucket armchair.

Saarinen continued to explore this design theme in subsequent years, creating many iconic designs for Knoll. He is also known for significant architectural works, including Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., and the TWA terminal at Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Classic Upholstery, Renewed: Each chair is meticulously reupholstered using premium materials that honor the soft, continuous upholstery language Saarinen intended. With refreshed cushioning and updated textiles, the chair maintains its luxurious feel while offering improved longevity for today’s work and home environments.

Versatile Leg & Base Options: True to Saarinen’s original multi-base design, the renewed chair may feature wooden legs, sleek metal legs, or a swivel base, each restored and refinished to modern performance standards. These options allow the chair to complement a wide range of interiors, from executive offices to contemporary living spaces.

Sculptural, Mid-Century Form: Inspired by Saarinen’s groundbreaking 1957 vision, this renewed chair retains its fluid, sculptural silhouette, a form that blurs the line between functional seating and modern art. Its continuous curves cradle the body naturally, reflecting the design principles that redefined executive seating in the mid-20th century.

Responsive Shell Construction: The chair’s signature shell, originally pioneered using flexible fiberglass, adapts subtly to body weight and posture, creating a responsive seating experience rarely found in modern reproductions. Chairorama’s renewal process preserves this adaptive quality while reinforcing the shell for long-term durability.
